Dog Biscuit Day
THE HOLIDAY: Every dog has its day – and this is it. Nobody seems to know the origins of Dog Biscuit Day, but every canine in the world knows the best way to celebrate it. Pets will be wagging their tails with glee when their owners serve up unusual or home-made doggy snacks to mark the occasion. More
THE ART: It's national doggie biscuit day. Give your dog a bone! . . . or a slice of layer cake, a savory ice cream cone, and a slurp of a Manhattan, er, Doghattan cocktail.
Early in 2016, Sara May and I started Barkday Cakes to bake birthday cakes and special-day treats for dogs. We love putting dogs in party hats and fancy outfits. And we believe dogs are family. Why not celebrate their birthdays, special occasions, and adoption anniversaries?!
Our treats are different from the usual dog biscuits. We use simple ingredients to custom bake small batches of cookies, cakes, snacks, and other confections that are so good you can share them with your pup, if you're so inclined. (Want to wear matching Hawaiian shirts and share an ice cream cone with your pup? We won't judge.)
At our small web store, you'll find lightly sweet treats like frosty Peanut Butter Banana Ice Cream Bites and Strawberry Cookies, as well as savory goodies like Beef Liver Brownies and Asian-inspired Shrimp Cakes with Nori Frosting. Spell out special messages with Edible Type cookies and cake toppers.
You can join the puppy party on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Tag your dog photos #barkdaycakes for a chance to be featured! The dogs you see here are Maxwell Von Snort, the most charming pug you can follow on Twitter; Gustav, the handsomest Great Dane you've ever seen; Ernesto Rivera, the fearless leader at Philadelphia's Dog School; and Timber Finn, a darling pup and Instagram star. We collaborate on all photography with dog photographer extraordinaire, Inna Spivakova of Peach Plum Pear Photo.
