THE HOLIDAY: Bikini Day is the anniversary of the invention of the bikini in 1946 by a Parisian fashion designer, Louis Reard. The goal of this holiday is to get to the closest beach, or find some cheap travel deals to the Philippines, Bali, Hawaii or anywhere with lots of beach, and spend the day in your bikini! More
THE ART: The name bikini was coined in 1946 by Louis Réard, the designer of the popular swimsuit that we celebrate today. He named the swimsuit after the island Bikini Atoll, where testing on the atomic bomb was taking place. Fashion designer Jacques Helm re-released a similar design earlier that same year, the Atome. . . . “Bombshell” was a common term for the ladies back then, and at the time, the design was “shocking" and “explosive."
So, there you go. Marketing.
